Chronic Headaches Hurt But Are Seldom Dangerous

15.08.2009 19:22
Anybody who experiences them already knows first-hand that chronic headaches can be extremely painful. A chronic headache is one that an individual has encountered repeatedly over a long period of time. Such headaches can be so painful that they actually incapacitate those who suffer from them. If you suffer from chronic daily headaches then perhaps you are becoming concerned that they are a symptom of a serious illness or disease. The good news is that chronic headaches are not generally indicative of a dangerous illness.

Terrible Tension Headaches

Chronic headaches can generally be narrowed down to one of two types of head pain. For example, some people frequently suffer from what are termed tension headaches. If you suffer from a tension headache it will feel like somebody has placed an excessively tight strip around your head. This awful feeling is actually caused by muscle spasms. People often get tension headaches after a particularly difficult day or because they have been in an uncomfortable physical position for an extended period of time.

Malevolent Migraines

Migraines are another type of chronic headache, and the exact reason why some people tend to suffer from them is not yet known. You will know if you are experiencing a migraine headache because the pain takes the form of a throbbing sensation down one side of the head or behind on of the eyes. This type of headache is typically exacerbated by light and sound, so relief often comes from resting in a dark quiet room for a while. Some people seem to suffer from migraine headaches more frequently than others.

When You Should Consult Your Doctor

Reoccurring headaches are not generally a sign that something is seriously wrong, but you should still make an appointment with your doctor, especially if your pain is so intense that it interferes with your ability to live an ordinary life. Your doctor may be able to prescribe a medication that offers relief and restores your quality of life.

Chronic headaches can often be managed with pain medication and they are not generally a sign of a pain tumor or some other life threatening malady. The type of headache you should be concerned about is one that you have never experienced before. You should be particularly concerned if your headache is making you feel seriously below par and is accompanied by symptoms such as blurred vision, weakness, confusion, seizures or numbness. However, bear in mind that most headaches are turn out to be completely harmless, so try not to panic.
