This is what most patients end up trying, to great success. There are a few different beta-blocker drugs out there that your doctor can choose from, but they do all work in relatively the same way. Beta-blockers are a class of drugs also referred to as beta-adrenergic blocking agents and beta antagonists. They work by blocking the action of endogenous catecholamines, on part of the sympathetic nervous system which mediates the fight or flight response. there are different types of beta-blockers available, and your doctor will need to make sure that they choose the right one for you and your particular condition. Also for cluster headache treatment, your doctor will talk with you about abortive treatment. The beta-blockers work as preventive treatments, so you take them on a regular basis in order to avoid developing a cluster headache to begin with. Now if you do end up getting a cluster headache, of course you are going to need a way to deal with it, and that is where the abortive treatments come into play. Medications include ergotamine, and more recently the drugs of the triptan family, which have proven to work very well. No matter which specific treatment your doctor recommends, it is important that you stay in close contact with them and let them know how you are progressing. If you feel as though you are having a bad reaction to any medication, or you are not seeing enough relief of your cluster headache pain, let your doctor know this and they will try you on a different treatment method. |
